As from the 1970s, coastal states and territories such as Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia have started to manage the use of coastal waters for recreation in transition to a tourism-dominated economy. A long-term sea-level rise projection with RCP8.5S in Queensland, Australia (Hoon et al., 20151177; Pearce et al., 20161178) emphasises the need for locally specific coastal and marine adaptation, and the potential for disaster risk management to be recognised as an important component of tourism planning and management. The chapter presents a preliminary analysis of a first Australian case study of coastal adaptation planning using the conceptual framework developed for this issue (Pearce et al., 20161178). Coastal resilience planning considers the risk coverage of hazard drivers, the market position of vulnerable coastal areas, the cost of mitigation and adaptation, and the spatially varying responses of socio-economic and political systems to climate change impacts. The central vulnerabilities are coastal flooding and adverse socioeconomic impacts on human settlements (Pearce et al., 20161178). Pies for the most vulnerable areas (n = 20) are being prepared with the advice of councils and community groups. Perlwitz et al. (20181179) show that in the absence of state and federal climate change adaptation strategies, local adaptation actions are being undertaken in response to impacts of SLR on infrastructure and services. These actions may include the provision of new infrastructure or the upgrading or modification of existing infrastructure to meet targets for minimum critical thresholds. They may involve direct adaptation, such as the design or lowering of ports and harbour approaches, and indirect adaptation activities such as the realignment of landuse or the relocation of populations from areas that are likely to be subjected to accelerated coastal erosion and the reshaping of the territory. Our analysis also demonstrated that climate-induced changes in ice, including sea-ice retreat and ice block formation, will materially expand the area of coastal ice in the near future, seaward of the current coastal ice edge in the Arctic. This is likely to lead to coastal flooding in coastal regions south of the edge, increasing the vulnerability of hinterland communities and water supply to emergency, weather-forced water supply disruptions and subsequent drought-induced social and economic crises. d2c66b5586
