Due to the vague nature of many of the portraits, the exhibition also features images of a biker, a workman, a schoolgirl, a boxer, a chess player, a pimp and a restaurant cook. The last one is a famous portrait of Eric Chevallier, the restaurant owner of Cartier.fr , probably the most well-known restaurant in Paris, and the last one to have been painted in Paris in the 1940’s.
“It would be impossible to think of contemporary art without the name of Cartier,” Nicolas Chartier explains. “Cartier was a pioneer in the field of photography, not only because he introduced equipment and techniques that enabled him to capture images of great power, but also because he made new portraits of people and places that are emblematic of his time. They are frequently the first but also the last of their kind.”
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue that reproduces thirty-six portraits by Cartier-Bresson, including more than twenty never published before. It accompanies the exhibition and is available from our bookshop. It is published by Gallimard in association with Centre National de la Photographie, Paris. The Cartier-Bresson Portraits, book English and French, 160 pages, 88 color and black/white images, 8.50€.
Before visiting, visitors may wish to read Photography Portraits, a catalogue of the exhibition, edited by Jean-François Robert and published by Éditions Hazan in 2003. It was awarded the 2003 Prix de la Photographie and the Prix des Critiques Jeunes Éditeurs for its visual and critical appraisal of the works on show. Photography Portraits 827ec27edc
